The 2025 United Nations World Social Report paints a sobering picture: nearly 60% of the global population is struggling emotionally, and more than one-third live in near-poverty. Inequality, distrust, and social isolation are reshaping our sense of community and belonging.
Yet even in this reality, there’s another story—one of compassion, unity, and the quiet power of faith.
When the World Feels Divided

It’s easy to feel disheartened when headlines scream about division and despair. Many have lost trust in institutions, leaders, or even one another. But across history, moments of great hardship have also been moments of great awakening.
“The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.”
— President Russell M. Nelson
Scripture and spiritual traditions worldwide echo the same truth: we are all connected.
-
In the Bible, Paul reminded the Galatians, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).
-
In Buddhism, compassion (karuṇā) is seen as the antidote to suffering.
-
In Islam, charity (sadaqah) and social justice are sacred duties.
-
In Hinduism, service (seva) is considered a pathway to divine peace.
No matter the faith or philosophy, the message is clear: when we lift others, we rise together.
“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”
— Mother Teresa

Faith in Action
Around the world, faith-based and humanitarian organizations of every kind are quietly answering the call to serve. The Catholic Church, through Caritas Internationalis and Catholic Charities, continues to provide emergency relief, education, and community development in some of the world’s most vulnerable regions. Islamic Relief Worldwide offers food, clean water, and disaster response in over 40 countries, guided by the principle of compassion for all of humanity. Jewish Federations support refugees, humanitarian aid, and mental health initiatives across global communities. World Vision International and Samaritan’s Purse bring hope and resources to those displaced by war, natural disasters, and poverty. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, through Latter-day Saint Charities, works alongside these and many others, providing clean water, wheelchairs, neonatal care, and food relief in more than 190 nations.
Together, these efforts remind us that faith is not confined to belief—it’s revealed in action. It’s the interfaith volunteer handing out meals after a hurricane. The small-town pastor opening his church as a warming center. The youth group raising funds for earthquake victims halfway across the world.
But it isn’t only institutions that change lives—it’s ordinary people choosing compassion in extraordinary times. It’s neighbors sharing meals, communities rebuilding side by side, and people of faith reaching across divides to heal what hardship has broken.
Every act of service, no matter how small, becomes part of a greater story—one of love in motion, faith without borders, and hope that refuses to fade.
“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.”
— The Dalai Lama

How We Can Help
When the world feels too heavy, hope begins with small, human choices:
-
Serve where you are. Offer your time, talent, or resources to a local shelter, food pantry, or interfaith service project. You may not fix everything—but you can make something better.
-
Listen with empathy. Everyone carries unseen pain. Listening with love often heals more than words ever could.
-
Simplify your giving. Small monthly donations, even $5, to humanitarian groups or community programs make a collective difference.
-
Pray or meditate daily. Prayer softens the heart, while meditation grounds the mind. Both open us to divine guidance and peace.
-
Build bridges, not walls. Step outside echo chambers. Have conversations that seek understanding rather than victory.
-
Create community. Host small gatherings where people can connect, share, and heal together. Isolation dissolves in authentic connection.
-
Remember your worth. If you’re struggling right now, know that you’re not forgotten. Your presence in this world matters—immensely.
“Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”
— Desmond Tutu
Finding Peace in Personal Struggle
For those facing poverty, loss, or emotional pain, peace can feel distant—but it isn’t unreachable.
Peace grows when we:
-
Turn our hearts toward gratitude, even for the smallest mercies.
-
Connect with others who understand our struggles.
-
Let ourselves rest in the assurance that light still exists, even when it feels dim.
You may not be able to change your entire situation overnight—but you can choose moments of stillness, prayer, or connection that bring the soul back to center.
Because peace doesn’t always come from fixing everything—it often comes from remembering you are not alone.
“No one is saved alone; we can only be saved together.”
— Pope Francis
The world is aching, but it’s also awakening.
We were made for more than survival; we were made for compassion. And if we each choose to see others as God—or life—sees them, we’ll find that even amid inequality and disconnection, there’s a deeper story unfolding: one of faith, humanity, and hope reborn.
