
Betrayal cuts deep. It shakes the foundation of your soul and leaves you questioning everything you thought you knew. For me, there were nights when the sense of betrayal was so overwhelming that my body physically reacted. I remember one night in particular, after learning something devastating about my marriage, I laid in bed shaking to the point of convulsing. For over four hours, I sobbed, my soul racked in torment, praying with every ounce of hope I could muster. Inch by slow inch, I began to relax enough to fall into a restless sleep.
The next morning, still heartbroken and devastated, I got up and drove from Dallas, Texas, to somewhere in Mississippi on my way to a doTERRA leadership retreat in Orlando, Florida. That trip became a turning point in my journey to healing.
Seeking the Peace Only Christ Can Bring
Throughout that trip, I strove to find peace—the peace that only Christ can bring. I decided to look for God in every moment. I noticed the beauty of the world around me as I drove. I listened to scriptures, uplifting talks, and inspiring podcasts. And when the pain felt too heavy to bear, I leaned into prayer, asking the Lord to help me carry what I could not carry alone.
One of the greatest blessings during that time was my friend Tiffany. She helped me identify the negative and false beliefs I was holding onto—beliefs that were weighing me down. She encouraged me to turn them over to the Lord. And I did, over and over again.
That two-day drive to Florida, the three days during the retreat, and the drive back became a time of surrender. With each step of the journey, I found new things to release to the Lord, and as I worked on myself, I felt the peace that only comes through the merits of Jesus Christ. That peace bathed me, restoring my strength and offering hope for a brighter future.
Steps to Overcome Betrayal
If you are navigating the pain of betrayal, know that you are not alone. Healing takes time, but there are steps you can take to move forward:

Acknowledge the Pain
Allow yourself to feel the hurt, anger, and grief. Suppressing emotions only delays healing. Give yourself permission to mourn what you have lost. -
Turn to God
Lean into your relationship with God. Pray, even if it’s with the smallest ounce of hope you can muster. Ask Him to help you carry the burden and to guide you toward peace. -
Seek the Beauty Around You
Look for God’s hand in the world. Whether it’s a beautiful sunset, a kind word from a friend, or a moment of stillness, allow yourself to see the good around you. -
Identify Negative Beliefs
Often, betrayal plants seeds of doubt and negative beliefs about ourselves. Work with a trusted friend, mentor, or counselor to uncover these false beliefs and turn them over to the Lord. -
Surround Yourself with Positivity
Fill your mind with uplifting talks, scriptures, and music. Let truth and light replace the darkness of betrayal. -
Focus on Personal Growth
Use this time to focus on yourself. What do you need to heal? What dreams have you put on hold? Take steps to invest in your personal growth and well-being. -
Surrender and Repeat
Healing is not linear. There will be days when the pain resurfaces. When it does, surrender it again to God. His grace is sufficient to meet you where you are.
Finding Peace in the Journey
Overcoming betrayal is not easy, but with Christ, it is possible. The peace that comes from His love is a balm to even the deepest wounds. It doesn’t mean the pain will vanish overnight, but it does mean that healing and hope are within reach.
If you are struggling to overcome betrayal, I encourage you to begin the journey of surrender. Start small. Seek the Lord in prayer. Notice His hand in your life. And as you do, you will find that His peace and love can carry you through even the darkest nights.
You are stronger than you think, and with Christ, you can overcome.
