“Hey, Bailey, I’m home,” Killian called out. The door slammed behind him. Two bags in both arms, he came into the kitchen, a grin on his face… “I got us some steaks and veggies to grill. Thought we’d have a celebratory early lunch before our FBI buddy gets here.” He pulled an onion, bell peppers, and steaks from the bag before taking a plate from a cabinet. “If you want to chop vegetables, I’ll start the grill.”
This—Bailey could do. Cooking, cleaning, and taking care of others. It gave her options when she was on the run. She wished she could believe it wouldn’t come to that, but she didn’t. As long as Roy Simmons lived, Bailey couldn’t. Not really.
As she cut up vegetables and tore lettuce for the salad, she let her mind go blank. Something she’d taught herself over the years so she wouldn’t go crazy in her loneliness. She cringed when Killian returned to the kitchen for the steaks and cut veggies, but she didn’t shut down. Progress, she thought.
They ate, chatting like old friends about her family and his. She was becoming comfortable with him. It had been so long since anyone had been nice to her. That must be why she found him a little attractive.
She jolted at the thought.
No.
No, that wasn’t possible.
The knock at the front door gave her another jolt, but it was welcome. She wouldn’t think of Killian as attractive again. It would do her no good.
